Introduction
I grew up in the small, northern Michigan town of Lake City. If you are looking at your left hand, making the mitt like all Michiganders do, Lake City is the first knuckle up from your wedding ring. My summers were spent on Lake Missaukee water skiing, fishing, and swimming. Winters were spent skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. After graduating from high school, I traveled to Mt. Pleasant to attend Central Michigan University.
While at CMU, I majored in Physical Science and English as I worked toward a B.S. in Secondary Education. Also while in college, I began working for a ferry company in Mackinaw City as a dockhand, deckhand, and dockmaster. I spent most of my seven seasons with this company working on their dock on Mackinac Island. Hence, the picture on this page. While there, I was fortunate to meet and work with individuals from around the globe. It was an experience I will never forget, and am very fond of the friendships I made while there. It was during this time that I finished college and began teaching.
Teaching brought me to Kalkaska, Michigan where I first student taught, then subbed and coached freshmen basketball. I left Kalkaska to take a high school English position in Cheboygan, Michigan. I would have stayed there except for an opportunity to return to Kalkaska to teach middle school science. This position, I would stay at for 12 years! I loved this assignment. The kids were fun to work with, and the staff was like a family. During this time I also was able to teach various sections of English, physical education, and computer applications. Additionally, I coached basketball during this time. Most importantly, I met my wife during this time.
In the spring of 2012, I took the leap and applied for a principalship in my district. I received the position, and started my first year as a principal in the fall of 2012. The first year produced several unique challenges, and as I worked my way through them, I found I really enjoyed this new path I have taken. During my second year, the retirements and transitions took its toll on the staff. After six new hires, the staff has been rebuilt. Over the course of the next 6 years, Cherry Street turned in to a family-oriented building that focused on the individual needs our kids.
In the spring of 2020, our district saw a shift in the administrative staff. The high school principal left, and our middle school principal filled his position. Interviewing for the Middle School position commenced. Though asked, I did not apply for the position. Then, imagine my surprise when I was told that I would be taking over for the middle school position starting a week before the staff started! Time flew by and the year began...with a pandemic. While the placement at the middle school caused a lot of anxiety, it is nice to be back with the building where I started my educational journey. My hope is that I can take the strengths of my old position and make them fit with the new position. There are a lot of strengths already connected to the middle school, I am excited to see what the future brings.
Now, after all that I have experienced, I find myself with a family of three young kids who love to travel and be outside. I feel that kids need to experience the world. Why stay at home when an adventure awaits you just around the corner? I hope, as you move through this portfolio, you will enjoy the life that I have been fortunate enough to experience. Enjoy!
